Cowboys Proprietor Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans

The National Football League has levied a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“It was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

League Context for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated wealth of $16 billion, making the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Offseason Controversies and Public Attention

This event follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that examined his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, even with its recent championship drought.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
