Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Return

A single player remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
